My passport has expired. It takes at least 20 business days to get a new one. I may not be able to go to Germany! There is no breathing calmly.

I mailed in an expedited request (though I didn't bother to include a return envelope which they recommend if you really need it back fast) on 2/22, the passport was issued on 2/29 and I received it a few days later (don't recall exactly when). That's under two weeks.
I'm sure you'll be fine, especially if you include the return envelope. I got my photo at a pharmacy, printed out the form online, and went to the local post office where they helped me with envelopes and everything.
Remember to send in your expired passport with it.
