Two scarves

They're both kind of meh. One looks fine but is scratchy, made from acrylic yarn:



The other is soft, made from some of the cashmere yarn that Max brought back from China, but looks like it was made for someone's grandmother:



They're both sitting in my present box until I can figure out what to do with them.

Flat top baby

I made a baby hat over the weekend for a friend's baby. Started on Friday and finished on Sunday.




The pattern is Flat-Top Hat by Iris Schreier and the yarn is Artyarns Supermerino. Knit on size 2 (2.75mm) needles, the stitches were quite tiny and still took some time in front of the TV to get it done.

I'm working on a larger hat for down the road when the baby girl is a little bigger using the Sweet Leaf Toddler Hat pattern by Gina House and some cotton yarn, Soleil.

Simultaneously, I'm working on a silk shawl for my Mom. Finally settled on a pattern (after ripping out two others), Meandering Vines Shawl. It's working for me finally. The silk yarn is very slippery, even on wooden needles but it will be worth it if my Mom loves it. She's coming down to visit in April so I need to get it done before she gets here. She asked for something that she could wear in the summer when it's warm out.

Lunch at Food Matters

On Saturday I met three friends, Gretchen, Laura, and Kate, for lunch at Food Matters. To my delight, the place was hopping! People were in picking up their CSA allotment for the week, having lunch, and having a drink at the bar. Although everyone had been to Food Matters at least once before, I made a few recommendations.

Laura had the soup of the day, a curried squash soup. She thought it was very good - spicy and squashy.



Gretchen, Kate and I shared the Pork Spring Rolls. I love them and they both agreed, they are SO good.



For lunch I had the Roseda Angus Beef Hamburger on Brioche with Garlic Butter, Lettuce and Onion - my favorite! Kate and Gretchen helped me with the giant mound of fries.



Gretchen had a mimosa and the Fluffy Whole Wheat Buttermilk Pancakes with Bacon, and Whipped Butter.



Kate had the Challah French Toast with Maple Syrup, Whipped Butter, and Scrambled Eggs.



Laura had the Quiche of the Day, mozzarella and ham, with the Mesclun Salad on the side.



Everyone enjoyed their lunch and we had a good time chatting.

After a long week...

Canada loves Obama

I got this email from my Mom yesterday:

"Just wanted you to know that your President had a successful trip to Ottawa. They have gone Obama crazy after he left. On his return to the airport, he went to Byward Market into the [Moulin de Provence] bakery that we usually go to. He bought cookies for his daughters. Big maple leaf cookies, with red icing and Canada on it. The baker refused to let him pay for them when he found out it was for his daughters. The rest of the day and the next week, those cookies were all sold out. Some secret service man went to look for snow globes which he collect. They found out he bought one with mounties in it and they are all sold out, including the keychain with a moose and maple leaf on it. Comedians are now doing skits on "Obama touched it", a store that sells the light switch from his hotel room, a mold of the snow where he stepped it, etc. Its been funny and good."

Food Matters is putting on a special dinner menu today for Mardi Gras including Boudin, Gumbo, Etouffee, Sazeracs, Milk Punch, and Hurricanes! For dessert they're making King Cake from scratch.

I finished these up two weeks ago and I've been meaning to give them to my massage therapist, Paula Goldman but I keep forgetting to bring them in every time I have an appointment. Hopefully I'll remember this week!

2nd Annual Rainbow Week

Last year there were a lot of people who enjoyed the rainbow week so I thought I'd do it again this year.

Starting with red of course!
